How important is it to get the support of the other?
My answer is, VERY.

People work so hard just to hear that sentence; "well done, i'm proud of you". This support reassures them.

But when this support turns on your back and tells you in your face that YOU WILL NEVER MAKE IT, this psychological impact is really great. It's so great that one may just give up forever.

People may say that those who give up are the ones with weak will. But I just want to state my main point; Support is Extremely important.

Support from your close and loved ones are the most important.
Sometimes all they want to hear, is just a mere sentence that proofs that they have done the family proud. And that they are not a loser.

Take my word for it. Support is very important. Be there for that person. Or you might just lose that person forever..

Food photography ain't easy at all. There must be angle, details and depth! I tried shooting food a few times but I still don't think I can make it yet. Below are some more tests.These are traditional Vietnam food! They taste AWESOME!

A friend once told be that if the photos of food looks yummy, you are successful as the photographer~

Stick in the Mud

Made a trip to West Coast Park yesterday, with the determination to get down and dirty! Abandoning my footwear, I proceeded into the mud. It was black and sticky. As I waddled into the oil-stained substance, I noticed little tiny snails crawling on the mud. Yuck. Started shooting the boats there, but nothing came out nice. (That's what you get when you try shooting HDR without a tripod and shakey hands.)
Before I got back to civilisation, I took 7 photos of this photo, with the thought of doing HDR. Who knows, my CS4 had to crash on me. So this photo is a single photo just slightly edited using LR.

I swear that next time I'm going there, I'm going in BOOTS!

I went for a wonderful Ritz Carlton international buffet and was amazed by the way the chef's design their food.Presentation is indeed important!

And not to forget to wow the person who is eating by asking her to release the main ingredient of the little desert by herself~

Rowing is very similar to canoing. Just that for canoing, you get to sit in the canoe and use both hands to paddle. But for rowing, you are kneeling downand using one hand to paddle your boat!

Caught this more interesting shot where the athelete went the wrong way into the other athelete's path during the competion!

It's HOCKEY TIME!=)
Hockey, is a sport that needs alot of han-eye coordination. For a photographer, you need to see these "on-coming tackles" from the atheletes.
At first, I could'nt seem to get the "tackling" shots properly. But slowly, I understood how the game is played and managed to capture some!=)
However, taking photos of sports is not just to capture the tackling shots, but to get more "interesting" shoots like this one and the one below.

I enjoyed shooting hockey the most!=)

Its not easy shooting throws as there is a safety netting preventing people from getting hurt.

So what I did was to put the lens near the green netting, and try to focus.haha

Number 083 is back in the game! This time, attempting to shoot hurdles!=)Herdles, a sport never achievable by me, yet looked so easy for the athletes.

Everyday without fail, I will see the same few athletes training and training and training. All the hardwork they put in, regardless of winning or losing, will not go to waste as its not always about the results,but more about the effort.=)

Yes, Young Photographer number 83 is back, and this time shooting high jump! High jump is a tough sport that requires a lot of muscles. Not only the arms and legs muscles, but also the stomach and back muscles!

I stared at her countless jumps, trying to jump across the targeted height for a while. Then, as she tried some more, I pressed my shutter even more.

Watching them try so hard makes me want to try harder to take nicer photos of them.
Oh well, I tried my best!=)

Unlike the media, my role as a volunteer was to take portraits of the different athletes and not the 'exciting moment' in the match. We are part of this Photoscape Project where all the Young Photographers (the status given to us)are to take portraits of the athletes, which will be printed out and pasted on 3 walls at Youth Olympic Park.

First day of duty, and I went to SP to shoot badminton players. As of that day, I was known as Number 83 (083).

I went to the National Museum again today. Last day of exhibit, WON'T miss it!
Learnt my lesson. NEVER EVER VISIT THE MUSEUM ON THE LAST DAY OF EXHIBIT. There will be a lot of people which make the shoot a difficult one.

There were mirrors everywhere, but I couldn't make use of them as there were TOO many people!argh! When I saw this sculpture, I kneel down to get the lights in, at the same time, to avoid seeing people in the shot. But still, there are people inside..

I'm also rather fascinated by the fact the photos can make things look really big. Take this photo for example. How big you thing it is?
It is actually only around 2cm big!

Portraits

Went to the National Museum today with the intention of shooting the "Quest for Immortality" exhibition. Due to the extra long queue, my friends and I decided to walk around the museum instead. I came home with a couple of portraits!

I'm an amateur when it comes to shooting portraits. Learning how to make full use of natural lights can be a difficult thing.

Personally, I feel that one should not smile in a portrait shot. But there are many ways to position the model (including the expression) to fit the theme. That would be the part where I must improve on.=p

Inspired by a friend's work, I always wanted to shoot a portrait of someone sitting on the steps where the lines make the entire photo go "WOW". This photo may not have the WOW factor, but I think that sometimes, its nice to have a simple shot.=)

When shooting, I always tell myself to take note of the surroundings. Make sure that you do not fall into a pond while shooting. Today, I noticed that there was an air vent causing big gush of wind every now and then. So I asked my friend to stand in front of it. And this was what I got.

I feel that when it comes to shooting portraits, the photographer must know what he/she wants. Communication is very important between the photographer and the model. The photographer must tell the model how to pose and what expression to hold. But it seems that you need a lot of experience to be able to do that well.
Oh well, at least this is a start!=)

D&D

VIP seats, great food, awesome music, a table filled with the board of directors, and an entire ballroom of unknown Year 3s.

Yes. I went for the school's Dinner & Dance. Paid ten bucks for VIP seats. Sat closest to the stage. Ate with the Directors of the different schools/faculty. Cool?
Yea, totally.

You must be wondering why a Year 1 like myself would be attending a D&D for Year 3s and get to sit at the VIP table. Well, I was shooting for the Year Book Club. The lecturer-in-charged said that those seats are the closest to the stage, thus it is more convenient to shoot (and eat).

Compared to the rest of the world, a grey top, black pants and black pumps seriously look shabby. Only one word could explain how I felt inside. WEIRD.

The entire ballroom was filled with colourful dresses and neatly ironed suits. I really don't know if I'm considered 'Outstanding' or 'Out of place'.

Regardless of what I'm wearing, the event was successful. I think that it is quite fun.

Like any other D&D/prom, there will always be the Prom King and Queen. They made the candidates catwalk on the dance floor. I decided to try out something new. Shot it with a fisheye. I had to lean in quite close to shot. Hopefully, I did not ruin the other photographers' shots by being in their frame.=P

My favourite part of all D&Ds would be the dance at the end. Everyone will come down to the dance floor and get all hyped up. (which indirectly make me high too!)

There will also be some people who will start to freestyle on the dance floor.

And of course, at every event, I try to shoot some arty shots. (Not sure if you consider this arty, but oh well who cares. I like it!)

Great event. Mainly because of the good food they have there (from my point of view). Such a waste that I didn't get to eat all the courses!={

Went to shoot another sunset today!Great sunset(compared to the sunset at Westcoast in the recent post)
This time, I decided to slow down the waves a little. An interesting effect. It turns the sea into ICE. wow.hahaha.lol.
Been wanting to shoot something like that for a long time.=)

Someone once told me that if you are shooting at a coastal area, and your feet don't get wet, something is wrong.

Wise words. Sometimes you just need to get a little dirty to shoot something unique.
It's good to keep that in mind. Thanks, friend!=)

I went back to YTSS yesterday. Took a D70s, Marco lens and a 36mm converter down to the EcoGarden to shoot dragonflies.
There were only two dragonflies around...I chased after them like siao.
Snap 266 shots, filtered to 9 photos and finally picked only 4 shots.
I guess my reputation as the Shutter Killer remains. HAHA

This is one of the four. Normal, but I LIKE.hahaa =P

Went to Chinatown to shoot that day.
I saw this uncle selling balloons! So I quickly shoot. He stood there for a while, but then he walked into the crowd and disappeared..
Luckily, I saw the uncle again near the "chess area" (a popular area where all the old uncle will sit and play chess). I ran after the Balloon Uncle and got this shot.

Events

Shooting events has become a very normal thing for me. With the past experience of event duties in school, I feel that I can handle it well. From getting the information/details of event, to going up the stage to shoot the audience.

I still remember my first event in school. I was merely following a senior. There were two rows of seats and right in the middle, was a red carpet. The GOH walks down the red carpet to his seat. Upon seeing the GOH entering, my senior walked to the red carpet, and standing right in the middle, shot the scene. Yet, I didn't even dare to walk to the middle of the hall and stand on the red carpet.

Maybe that was the reason that got me interested in Photography. The gut to stand in the middle where everyone else can see you and what you are doing. To boost my own courage?

Shooting events, is my forte and my greatest weakness. Why? Because I suck at indoor Photography (like in an auditorium, where the lighting isn't that fantastic). So, I guess having the courage isn't everything. Haha.

Tennis Novice Open

Once again, I've shot photos of TENNIS!=)
Braving the storm, I brought my camera out into the courts. I hope my old buddy won't die just like that. (There was a slight drizzle then it stopped.)Haha. Anyway, here are the shots.=)

Good thing I have some experience in shooting tennis now. The moment I stepped onto the courts, I up my ISO to 800. Now, at least I can see the tennis ball in the photo and the ball is ROUND!(some are still slightly deformed)

I also learnt to gauge when to press the shutter. As mentioned before, a tennis ball is the fastest ball in photography. Now when I see the player throw the ball in the air, I wait for about 2 seconds, then press the shutter!And, wah-la! I got the shot of the player serving AND the ball!

And again, I was lucky to get a shot like this, just like the time I shot the NUS tennis competition (featured in an older post).

The last time I shot doubles, I shoot them separately. This time, muahahahahaa!!I clever liao! I have two person in the photo!!! Now people will know that this is a doubles match! To be more precise, a MIXED double match!=p

Players each have their own character and habits. When you noticed that this particular player has the habit to make a certain move, you are in luck! This gives you more time/chances to take a perfect shot of that move/habit. Especially for a newbie like muah!=)
I was quite lucky to get this shot, because his eyes aren't covered by the racket!!Lucky~

Rays of hope

Have anyone asked you to look at a photo and guess if the photo was a sunrise or a sunset? If you were to choose sunset, you are said to be rather passive. But I beg to differ. To me, the sun is seen as hope. Regardless it being a sunrise or a sunset, it shows Hope.

So, what do you see? A sunrise? A sunset? Or just plainly Hope?

Japanese Cemetry

Went to the Japanes Cemetry today. Peaceful place, just like the Kranji War Memorial. Only that the tombstones are not that well taken care off.

The first thing that come to my mind when I think of a cemetry would be the tombstones. Of course, I took some shots of the tomstones, but there are many other small things there too. (Just like the flowers at Kranji War Memorial)

Every time I took a photo of a tombstone, I would bow 90 degrees. Stupid, I konw. But at least I feel like I'm being respectful to them.

I spent quite some time taking this photo. The drop of water took like forever to drip! But the wait was fruitful cause I got my shot.=)

Hmm..no idea why I shot this, but I like it=)

Spent a long time manual focusing this one.Haha.

I finally got this shot that I always "see" when I sit the cirle line.Yeah!Dream come true!=)

Super Star Vigro - Family Portrait

Walking around the cruise searching for the right location for a shoot is boring. But when you finally found the right location, BAMM! you get started with your shoot!
I was walking around the deck with my triport thinking of getting some star trail/ interior design, when I came across this stage like platform by the poolside. That was it! The perfct place for a shoot!( Even though it is off my original objective of shooting the stars.)
Anyway, I call these shots Family Portrait. Enjoy=)

This shot was taken in the cruise library. The chairs reminded me of those which you see in studios where family portraits are taken, just that this one does'nt have a backdrop of some reddish-like and royal kind of wallpaper/screen.

Superstar Virgo - Activites

Mid Autumn Festival - Part 2

The rain finally stopped.
I went out to get supper and saw children carrying lanterns and playing with candles!
So once again, I whiped out my handphone and started shooting.

I'm really glad that the tradition stays on!!=)

Wet Mid Autumn Festival

A wet mid autumn festival. I can totally see the image of a kid carrying his lantern in one hand and an umbrella in the other. Drama. Hahaha!

Despite my buddy still recuperating in the hospital, I was determined to shoot something with my handphone. But, the streets were empty.

After a long search, I finally found people carrying lanterns, celebrating Mid-Autumn festival.

I'm really glad that there are still people out there celebrating mid autumn festival the traditional way - drinking tea, eating mooncakes and carrying lanterns- regardless the weather. =)

Superstar Virgo - Interior

Hey all! The first post was simply a preview of what happen during the trip. So in this post, we will be looking at the interior of the ship!=)

It was the first thing tat Wow-ed us, when we saw the ship while waiting for the boarding to begin.

Horse-Riding

Horses. Intelligent creatures. A friend.

Went horse-riding for the first time in my life. The horse allocated to my group was Saskamiri. She was a beautiful blackish-brown horse.

Riding horses needs skills! Trotting is tough. We had to keep practising standing up n sitting back down while the horse is walking. Then, we do the actual trotting. TOUGH!

Anyway, it was a great day and I enjoyed horse-riding!!=)
(Going back again next year=p)

The Singapore Young Photographers' Convention occured on the 5th of September. It is a compeition where photographers age 14-20 can participate. We were randomly split up into groups of 4, given a theme and asked to submit 4 photos and a 100 word extract about the photos(photo essay).

I was grouped with 3 guys from TP. They were great photographers. One of them brought their Macbook and shared the photos. His shots were AWESOME!

Anyway, the theme was MACABRE. (ultra chim!) Upon hearing the theme, the guys had lots of ideas:blood on flowers, dead man, fights,etc.. My head was blank...

Nevertheless, we got through the day and ended up with a 3rd prize. Yeah! (Anyone wants to buy a Canon Selphy ES 30 compact printer at $250?)

"Children-Watching"

People watching is an interesting thing to do. But have you tried "children watching"?? Well, I certainly have! And this is what I observed:

1) Boys LOVE dinos n those little soilders toys.

2) Girls LOVE teddy bears (especially those little girls! they love BIG fluffy bears)

3) Kids LOVE playing with water.

4) They LOVE this thing at the playground where you sit on it an someone else spins you round n round.

5) Some parents are very very very VERY against other people taking photos of their kids. And they will go all out to prevent you from taking!

Children have the most beautiful eyes. They have the innocent look. One good reason why I enjoy taking photos of kids.

They have the nicest smiles and the loudest laughter. Where can you find such a pure heart?

They are also the most expressive beings- smiles, frowns and the funny looks.

Children..the best models one can find!

Reminiscence

One thing I don't really enjoy doing in the past, but long to do it now.

I miss those days.

Going to the art room everyday to finish up my prep boards. Bringing colour pencils and drawing block to school everyday so that I can draw something when I have the time. Getting bad remarks from the teacher regarding my drawing.

I remember looking around at different things daily, trying to "train" my eyes to be able to see what colours an object consists of. My teacher said that I couldn't colour well as I can't see what "other" colours an object has. One day she told me to look at the fire extinguisher and asked me what colours i see. Immediately, I told her that it was red. And she said: "Wrong! Not only is there red, it has blue and a slight tinge of green!"

A fire extinguisher is red. Seriously, do you see blue and green?!

Well, those were the days...

I remember the days where I went back to school to help paint a mural outside the art room. All the emo and fun time I had. Painting that wall was not only fun, it made me understand and appreciate art better. And it proves that I CAN PAINT!! (but not like a pro..yet!)

Painting soothes the heart. Unless you can't seem to paint something that you want to paint. It's just like photography. Sometimes I see this scenery. I can "see" THE picture in my mind. But I can't seem to capture it down.

After seeing what you have done comes the best part~the sense of satisfactory!!

Sometimes you find yourself struggling to get to the top, just to find yourself falling back down to where you came from.

Life is harsh..

What's the point in struggling out of that eggshell? You may just die of exhaustion..

Is it really the best choice to keep on fighting?

Or it is better to just sit back and relax sometimes?

Tennis

My current favourite sport- Tennis =)

Shooting tennis seems much easier than playing it. But NOO!! It definately ain't easy!

Tennis ball is the fastest ball to catch in photography.

My first time turned out quite terrible. 90% of the shots had no ball!

I think this is one of my best shot that day=)

Serving- needs skill to shoot!

I only had 2 or 3 shots of the guy serving WITH the ball in the photo.

Hmm..not focusing on the subject brings out a whole new story??

Freezing a skill?

One thing I like about photography is that we are able to "freeze" things.
Don't get what I mean?
Let's take a look at Hiphop. Such fast movements can be frozen and captured.

At first, I wanted to shoot some arty shots where the movements are blurred. But then, I felt that when it comes to such fast-paced activity, maybe i should slow things down a little. So I increased my ISO to 800 and started shooting at 1/320 instead of the arty 1/60.

Emotions are one interesting thing to take note too. Sometimes a smile is the missing piece to the puzzle.

Or, that intense concetration could to the trick too. =p

When someone talks about NDP, the first thing that will come to my mind would be: FIREWORKS!

Fireworks-something that I definately can't shoot well.
The hand-eye coordination (the 1st burst of fireworks and the pressing of shutter) is one serious skill needed to shoot. For a person who plays different sports that need hand-eye coordination, I didn't think that I would have such a problem. But, I guess that its just...different.
Well, practice makes perfect=)

Kranji War Memorial

Today I went to the Kranji War Memorial. The place is the most wuloo place in the world!! (look at the station, nobody!!) I met my friends at Kranji MRT station and we walked for quite some time (at least a 20 min walk) before reaching there.

The Kranji War Memorial is a quiet and peaceful place. One interesting thing I noticed about all the tombstones was that they were all facing outwards. I wonder why..

There are flowers in front of every tombstone. I think I saw at least 6 different type of flowers! Instead of shooting the tombstones, I ended up shooting the flowers instead! (It's a great place to shoot flowers!)

I think I will head back there again someday to continue to shoot the flowers =p .
